Coronation Sussex

Coronation Sussex

We just got our first Coronation Sussex from Kat LeDue in Taneytown, MD. We drove up to get him and she gave us the “Tour” of her lovely chicken and goat farmette.

Kat has some of the nicest chickens, peafowl, geese and Miniature Silkie Fainting Goats I’ve seen. This is a link to her site. CLICK HERE

We are so egg-cited to get this new addition to our flock. Here is a bit about the history of this newer breed of Sussex and how it got to the USA.

Coronation Sussex

The Sussex is an English heavy breed that’s been around since the turn of the century. In the US, Speckled, Red, and Light Sussex are recognized, while the British recognize several more varieties, including Buff, Brown, and Silver.

It is famous as a table fowl and the cocks should weigh in at 9 pounds, with the hens reaching 7 pounds. The hens, which are fair setters, lay a light brown egg. The Light Sussex has been used widely in the development of sex-linked hybrids for commercial laying flocks.

The Coronation Sussex variety was bred to honor the Coronation of King George. Essentially, something like a wedgewood blue replaces the black markings found on a Light Sussex.

The breed is still quite rare in the US, with trios still fetching up to $600.00 US, if you can find them that is. The first Coronation Sussex were imported to the US from Australia a couple years ago. The breed is rapidly finding favor for its mild temperament and large size. The color is an added plus.

We are finding our Coronation Sussex to be friendly and non-aggressive, even though he is bigger than any other chicken we own. We hope to have a small flock of these magnificent birds soon.
