The Silkie Bantam Chicken is one of the most popular and beloved, and certainly one of the most entertaining to watch, ornamental chicken breeds. They are kind of the “lap dog” of the chicken world.
They come complete with furry plumage and an incredibly sweet disposition. Silkies are kind of like a “flock” of puppies… but unlike other pets, your Silkie chickens will actually give you your breakfast!
Silkies originated in the Far East, (Both China and Japan claim to have developed them.) where they are still kept as pets (and eaten and considered a delicacy) today. They have black skin and bones and 5 toes instead of the normal 4. They have cute little crested heads and some are bearded.
Silkie hens make wonderful brooders and mothers, and are known to adopt any baby chick, keet or duckling if given the chance! I know from experience that they are terrible egg hoarders. :0) In fact, Silkie hens just may try to brood a puppy or kitten if given the chance.
The following video shows two cute little Silkie chicks we just hatched in our incubator.
Silkie hen and roo, Quan Lee and Hop Sing. (Hop Sing is molting so please don’t notice lack of fluffy head.)
